WONG KAr WAi

For most mood boards, Wong Kar Wai is an absolute inspiration. It is due to the fact that his use of symbolism is apparent throughout his films, and his camera editing creates this dreamy atmosphere through his visuals. His most famous movie, Fallen Angels, is well-known for its intimate kinetic visual style, cinematography, and use of sound. He uses many shots that remain out of focus and transition abruptly into different scenes, which some may call a "flaw".

WONG KAI WAR

These images illustrate the different types of shots used in the "fallen angel" film by the wong kai wars.

Examples include:

  • tilted frame

  • mid shot

  • close up

  • extreme close up

  • long shot

  • two shot

As a result of the lenses used by Wong Kai War in his film, most viewers find his cinematography uncomfortable due to a feeling of claustrophobic in some scenes.

My personal opinion is that Wong Kai Wars Cinematography stands out, and his "flawed" techniques inspired me as their symbolism of youth is one of my main components that remains in most of my initial ideas.

Wong Kar Wai

Wong kar wai is an internationally known film maker as he's known for his unique and  emotionally stunning work.

Wong Kar Wai's film work usually often feature a protagonist in need of romance, which contrasts their heavy and detrimental current life status and shows the juxtaposition between the needs and current status and clashes into each other as his film work mainly contains vivid imagery also considering most of his films are set in the 1960's or the modern era using 60's song.

Wong kar wai's techniques really inspire me as in his film his characters usually talks in their head with their voice into reflective surfaces, and their voice would only be heard by the viewer.

Wong  kar wai's film techniques are so brilliant that hes filmwork often uses symbolism or visual metaphorical situations to outline the moods of each character in various situations, he also uses the colours red and blue as a backdrop for his opening or endings which might be culturally significant as each element relates to a certain aspect of ideaology.

QUARTERBACK
-THE WALLOWS

The music video for The Wallows fits into my concept of youthfulness, and again, the grainy visual aesthetic of the 2000s gives us a very nostalgic feeling, similar to how digicams and camcorders do.

Wallows' music videos have always inspired me as they evoke the 80's vibe in the visual filter and in the way the characters are dressed in the video.

As a result of the lenses used by the wallows in this music, most viewers find this type of cinematography to be quite joyous and nostalgic in a sense that cinematography like this are less common and hard to achieve via using your phone.

HEART OF GLASS-BLONDIE

Visual representation, Heart of Glass, utilises overlaying videos and is almost identical to what I would like to film for mood board 2.

Blondies music video which was released in 2009, still remains as an iconic video. Again, fitting with a retro 80s style with the use of various colour schemes but the main focus is on the lead singer, Blondie. I feel this music video does a good job of using cutout clips, which I would also like to incorporate to my initial music video.

  • mid shot

  • close up

  • extreme close up

  • long shot

And a very clear use of different lighting effecrs such as:

  • rim light

  • full light

  • key light

The fact it was released in 2009, means that such things like lighting was possibly enhanced, camera quality in 2009 has now improved since then, but in order to achieve this look in cinema photography you would possibly make it 480p, however in my case i own various of old digital cams that can achieve this effect.

SAM WANG
(YISHENWINE HOUSE)

Yishenwine house, is a small creator that i have been following for some time, who truley inspired me to start doing film. Sam Wang's short film has that dreamy aspect that Wong Kar Wai films have. i love the colour and how the main focus is on the character itself and the things around the character being to stand out.

One thing that really brings out Yishenwinehouse's work is his use of cutaways and clips he uses and how they use it to manipulate how we as an audience feel even through the use of colour give us as an audience that dreamy aspect that we cant stop but look, Yishenwinehouse's cinematography really shows a good execution of it.

One key aspect is that he uses light and the use of filters to create an effect such as nostalgia and or euphoria.
